ETHICS STATEMENT

As a documentary photographer, I always approach my work with respect, understanding, and honesty toward the people I photograph. Photography has always been an effective way of telling stories and highlighting the lives of individuals and communities that are often overlooked, misunderstood and misrepresented. My work follows ethical principles, from my first conversations with the people I photograph to how I share their stories with everyone else.

Here are the key principles that inform my work:

Respect I believe that everyone deserves to be treated with kindness and respect. I ensure that I understand each person's unique story, feelings, and experiences and that the people I work with feel listened to, appreciated, and empowered.

Consent and Collaboration Consent is a key part of my work. I ensure that everyone I photograph understands how the images will be used and where they might be shown. Before taking pictures, I explain the project and ask for their agreement. I see my subjects as partners in the process and value and respect their thoughts and feedback.

Transparency It is essential that the people I photograph understand my process, goals, and their role in my projects. Trust is critical in my documentary practice, and I ensure that all participants feel comfortable with the process and the final outcome.

Honesty Documentary photography has a social responsibility to create truthful images of individuals and communities. Altering or distorting the reality of the individuals or subjects I photograph is unacceptable. The narrative I present must not misrepresent those I depict or mislead those who view my work

Cultural Sensitivity I recognise that society comprises unique cultural, social, and personal opinions. I approach our unique communities with respect and an unbiased understanding of their cultural and historical backgrounds. I work sensitively with all individuals, ensuring I treat everyone equally.

Empowerment I believe in giving individuals a presence and a voice within society. I ensure that those I work with are heard and seen on their terms, challenging common beliefs by presenting authentic and respectful portrayals that recognise each person's struggles.

Confidentiality The privacy of the people I photograph is paramount; I do not disclose any personal information I gather without permission. I recognise that some stories are sensitive or deeply personal. If any subject requests that their image or story remain confidential or private, I will honour that request without hesitation.

Ethical Impact Documentary photography can evoke powerful emotions. I approach all subjects sensitively, minimising any potential harm, whether through the process of photography or the broader social impact it may have. I am conscious that we all have different needs, and I am committed to the well-being of those whom I photograph.

Social Responsibility My work focuses on promoting positive societal changes. Through my documentary photography, I aim to highlight significant social issues, amplify marginalised voices, and encourage meaningful debate.

These ethical principles ensure that my documentary photography is meaningful and respectful of the individuals and communities I work with. If you have any questions or concerns about my practice or want to learn more, please feel free to reach out.
